The Parvathi Blog Grand Finale

"Memories of my parents"

by their only child.

(Smt. Mysore Prabha, daughter of Sri. K. Srikantiah)

It has been a little over a year since my dear Father, K.Srikantiah, left for his heavenly abode at the ripe age of ninety-six. It was the blessings of his Aaradhya Daiva, Sri Rama, that the transition to the next form happened without any pain or suffering whatsoever. In fact, it was only the second time in his life of 96 years that he stepped inside a hospital, that too for a short period of 24 hours.

As a child, my first impressions of my father were that he was a very strict, disciplined and dominating man. He certainly was all of that. Everyone seemed a little afraid of him.

But later on, as I grew up, I realised that he was equally caring, loving and helpful. He was passionate about three things in life - Lord Rama, Music and Gardening. GNB was his all-time favourite singer and an evergreen hero. Some melodious songs of Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar (especially the semi-classical tunes of R.D.Burman) moved him as much as the classical depths of M.L.Vasanthakumari or a Madurai Somu. His enthusiasm for Indian Cricket was infectious. I remember him planning his day in advance so that nothing would disturb his viewing of the match. Father loved watching good movies -whether it was English, Kannada, Hindi, Tamil or Telugu. His favourites were Roman Holiday, Ranganayaki, Babruvahana, K. Balachandar movies, and Shankarabharanam, to name a few. Indeed- a man of varied interests.

Above all, my father's passion for Carnatic music surpassed everything else. From his teenage to his nineties, musicians from six generations and their music filled his life.

As I recall, every day our house would echo with either a musician's live singing or music being played on my father’s precious spool tape recorder. It was this passion of his that drove him to organise Ramanavami and Ganesh festivals for more than sixty years. His joy, seeing that thousands enjoyed these concerts, was boundless. A thousand namaskarams to Lord Rama for giving my father such a fulfilling and worthy life.

***

To my utter misfortune and deep regret, my dear mother, Vatsala Srikantiah, also joined my father at the Lotus Feet of  Lord Rama on the 26th of August,2025, within a year of my father's passing. It had been just 48 hours before that father's first year Vaikunta Samaradhana was performed. Probably she heard her husband's commanding voice calling her, 'VATSALA!',  and the dutiful wife that she was, she went and joined him.

The two were made for each other, I feel.  Both shared their interests in music, festivals, traditions, rituals, movies, socialising, travelling, etc. Both Father and Mother were very good singers. They used to sing together on occasions. Their rendition of ' Vande Sadaa Padmanabham'  at the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum is still ringing in my ears.

The music festivals that my father conducted for decades would not be possible without the support and co-operation of my mother. Behind the curtains, it was she who took care of the pooja arrangements, kitchen supervision, catering endlessly to the musicians who used to stay at home, attending to guests and visitors, etc. I have never seen her talk back or go against the wishes of her husband even once. She would quietly go about her duties. What a great pillar of strength she was to all of us!

I miss you both terribly, Anna and Amma!

The passing of my parents has coincided with the curtains coming down on our blog. It has been a wonderful, satisfying journey of sharing my father's legacy of recordings of the concerts he organised with the music-loving world.  The blog itself was the brain-child of my cousin brother, Vish Murthy (nephew of Srikantiah), with the able and constant support of Sri. R.Sachidananda ( a scholar and an ardent music lover).

Now it is time for our blog to come to an end. We are doing so with a sad, yet content, heart. For the finale, we are posting the live recording from a very soulful jugalbandi concert of Vidwans Mysore Manjunath and Pravin Godkhindi, held in 2017. This also happens to be the last concert my father organised in Mysore (in memory of his father, K.Puttu Rao), at the age of 89 years.

On this Vijayadashami day, May Goddess Chamundeshwari bless all our viewers and listeners with Ayur, Arogya, Soukhyam.

                                                                                 Yours ever,

                                                                                 Mysore Prabha

A Tradition of Recognising Excellence - M. Balamuralikrishna - Parvathi Ramanavami Concert 1971

Parvathi felicitating Maestro M. BalamuraliKrishna 1971

Soon after starting the Ramanavami festival in the 60s, Mr. K. Srikantiah made a concerted effort to attract the best of musicians and felicitated them. Thus it was that in 1971, Vid. M. Balamuralikrishna was handsomely felicitated in the presence of several connoisseurs and musicians.

We are sharing this concert recording from 1971 as our blog's penultimate tribute to Sri.K.Srikatiah's memory among rasikas and musicians world over for his immense service to the cause of art and Mysore rasikas.

Keenly aware of the occasion then, BMK also performed a stellar concert in the company of the best of artistes, viz. Vid. M. Chandrasekharan, Vid. Umalaypuram Sivaraman and Vid. Vikku Vinayakram. His Chandrika raga alapana, followed by his own composition, was received with many appreciative murmurs. His treatment of Devadi Deva had established his stardom already in Mysore, being applauded by the composer himself! Here, he rendered it with the same gusto. "Chandru" followed the mood and method assiduously. Kharaharapriya was a favourite of Sri. K. Srikantiah and the raga and song would have surely thrilled him. All in all, this concert has the stamp of BMK, full of melody and inventiveness.

Vid. Umayalpuram Sivaraman,  recipient of Padma Vibhushan and Sangeeta Kalanidhi among several titles, celebrated completing 80 years of performing in concerts very recently, by playing in the Kalahasteeshvara Temple, Kumbhakonam, where he had his arangetram in 1935! Our felicitations to the doyen of percussion art.

The Star of Mysore and ಮೈಸೂರುಮಿತ್ರ newspapers have more than 70% circulation in the city of culture and royalty. Sri. Ganapathy, its founder-editor, was a long-time friend and associate of Sri. K.  Srikantiah. He penned this tribute himself in April 2025, around the Ramanavami festival time.

We regret to report that Sri K. B. Ganapathy himself left us a couple of days back.  May his spirit, always ebullient, stay connected with us always!

The Unparalleled Maestro - Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna

Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna in the home of Parvathi - 1967

There has never been a more prolific and multifaceted musician in Indian music than Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. As one who composed in all the 72 melakartas as a teenager, as one who conquered Madras audiences while still being an "Outsider",  as one who was the only classical male vocalist to make a mark in film music, in light music, as well as in devotional music across languages, and achieve fame and reverence as a vocalist among Hindustani music audiences, he did it all. His appeal to Hindustani audiences was such that he was featured alongside Bhimsen Joshi and Kishori Amonkar! No raga or composer escaped his masterly treatment. What appeared as an effortless ease on the stage was the product of a genius honed to perfection in Nature's bosom.

BMK, as he was affectionately called by Madras audiences, once proudly claimed that no award or honour due to a musician would ever be denied to him. He also claimed he enjoyed eating ice-cream just before a concert!

M. Balamuralikrishna rose meteorically to fame in the 1960s through his innovative approach to Carnatic music and his expanding influence beyond traditional concert settings. By the late 1960s, he was hailed as one of the most famous Carnatic singers, known for his brilliant voice, mastery over multiple instruments, and prolific compositions.

Balamuralikrishna successfully wielded administrative roles, notably as music producer and later programme director for All India Radio (AIR) in Vijayawada and Hyderabad. He launched the influential early morning devotional radio show "Bhakti Ranjani," which became widely popular and was later adopted by other stations. These roles helped him create new audiences for Carnatic music and brought his artistry to a broader public.

In this house concert, conducted at the residence of Sri. K.K. Murthy, the younger brother of Sri. K. Srikantiah, BMK's forte across all these dimensions, is on full display. His own compositions shine with his unique treatment. He sings the songs that he made famous - be it a song of Jayadeva or of any other composer, even in the film world!

The way BMK sings Amrithavarshini, Shanmukhapriya, Kapi...they will linger long in our hearts and minds.

We are posting the last few remaining archive recordings left behind by Sri. K. Srikantiah... with a sense of duty and fulfilment.

Vid. Sudha Raghunathan - 2007 Ramanavami Concert at Parvathi

Sangeetha Kalanidhi Vid. Sudha Raghunathan - Sri Ramanavami 2007

One of the favourites of the Parvathi audiences, and a celebrated concert artiste for over three decades, Vid. Sudha Raghunathan performed in 2007 at Parvathi to a full house. Unfortunately, the audio we can retrieve is a "hall recording" with significant sound degradation. However, the concert stands as a testament to Vid. Sudha's calibre and concert aesthetics.

We decided to ask Perplexity.AI to list five notable facts about Vid. Sudha. Here is what it told us!!!

Here are the five best things one can say about Vid. Sudha Raghunathan:

One of India’s foremost Carnatic vocalists and a Padma Bhushan awardee: Sudha Raghunathan is widely recognized as one of the leading exponents of Carnatic music, having been honored with some of the country's highest civilian awards including the Padma Bhushan (2015) and Padma Shri (2004).

Recipient of the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi: She was awarded the Sangeetha Kalanidhi by the Madras Music Academy, a distinction regarded as the highest honor in Carnatic music, and she was among the youngest to receive it, marking a generational transition in the field.

Innovator and global ambassador for Carnatic music: Sudha has evolved a distinctive style, blending tradition with innovation, and has performed at major venues worldwide, including being the only Carnatic musician after M.S. Subbulakshmi to sing at the United Nations. Her repertoire spans over 200 albums and includes forays into film and fusion music.

Dedicated disciple and torchbearer of a legendary lineage: She is a direct disciple of the legendary Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari, and has carried forward her guru’s legacy, both musically and in her approach to professionalism, resilience, and stage presence.

Committed philanthropist and educator: Beyond music, Sudha Raghunathan has made significant contributions to society through her Samudhaaya Foundation, supporting numerous social causes including health, education, and disaster relief, and actively promoting music education and outreach.

These qualities underscore her artistic excellence, pioneering spirit, and social commitment, making her a role model in the world of Indian classical music and beyond.

Classic Dynamics - Prof. T.R. Subramanyam1977 Ramanavami

Vid. T.R. Subramanyam - 1977 'Parvathi' Ramanavami Concert
with Lalgudi Jayaraman, Vellore Ramabhadran, M.A. Krishnamurthy

Prof. T. R. Subramanyam

Master of his manodharma  ( Quote from Sruti Magazine, Nov.2013)
The musical style of TRS was innovative. His performance was always based on robust fundamentals.
Rhythmic dominance did condition his rendition. TRS treaded a path laid and determined by himself. It was at once conventional and unconventional. As a master of many musical forms he indulged in endless experimentation, striving to strike a judicious balance between swara and laya. Subbudu referred to TRS as an embodiment of Tala, Raga and Swara (TRS). TRS was indeed a maestro with a difference, because the impressions of his preceptors pale into insignificance when contrasted with his individualism.
                                                                           (Unquote)

We are now approaching the last mile of Parvathi concert uploads. This is also the period when we remember the last year without the most gracious presence of Sri. K. Srikantiah in physical terms amongst us. So, we thought it best to share excerpts from a great concert of the redoubtable TRS with stellar accompaniment. The recording we retrieved begins in the middle of a robust Kalyani, with a strike rate worthy of the best of T20 innings. But as the Kalyani proceeds with the Sawaal-Jawaab format with Lalgudi, we realise this is nothing like short and fiery T20 innings. The maestro goes on striking the boundaries in his elaborate swara prasthara. Lalgudi, whom by the way TRS idolised, holds nothing back. This was the glory days of these great musicians and also the best of times at Parvathi festivals!

Hi-Octane, High Vidwat - Vid. Sanjay Subrahmanyan - 2007 Sri Ramanavami

Vid. Sanjay Subrahmanyan- 2007 'Parvathi' Ramanavami Concert

For this Finale Post, we have picked up a typical Sanjay concert. This Sangita Kalanidhi has many facets in his concert presentations but we rarely hear of his exploits and spoils outside the concert stage!

We don't have a great quality recording this time although this concert is of relative recency given the Parvathi reputation for posting concerts of vintage of fifty years and more.

The song list is sufficiently evocative. See that range of ragas, composers. The amount of vocal innovation evident in this concert is simply astounding. The repeated and loud applause that greets both vocal and violin solo portions speaks of an enthusiastic and delighted audience that filled the Jaganmohan Palace auditorium that day.

Jai Ayodhya Ram! - Vintage MLV concert

1974 Rama Pattabhisheka Concert - Dr. MLV

The world is celebrating the consecration of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya in the new Ram Mandir built after the Supreme Court verdict. It ends 500 years of a slavish mentality and celebrates the most important incarnation in the Hindu Pantheon, Shri Rama, who stands for Dharma.

रमन्ते योगिनः यस्मिन् सः is the etymology of the word "Rama". Shri Rama reveals His true nature and form only to the foremost of Yogis. But as the supreme king of all mankind, ruling from Ayodhya, he gives joy to all... of all species and at all stages of evolution!

The celebratory song जगदानन्दकारक could have been sung only by a saint of the calibre of Sri. Thyagaraja. The entire song, the first of the Pancharathna krithis, celebrates the joyous nature of Shri Rama! No wonder the whole world is in joy as we witness the historic consecration of the Ayodhya Ram temple on 22 January 2024. What better way for the home of Parvathi to celebrate this than by sharing the audio recording of a great concert by the perennial favourite of rasikas, Dr. MLV, held on Shri Rama Pattabhisheka day in 1974 in Parvathi! Vid. MLV displays her virile and imaginative concert style full of cascading Brighas and songs to satiate the Rasika on the occasion of Sri Rama Pattabhisheka!

Come, let us enjoy this wonderful vintage classic of an MLV concert!

Memories of a Bygone Era

Vid. Lalgudi Jayaraman - Sri Ramanavami 1984 - Violin Solo

By R. Sachi

The Parvathi Finale is bringing up the December Season of Carnatic deluge with this upload of a vintage Lalgudi Solo concert from 1984 (~40 years ago!).

If you are a silver-haired veteran rasika, try explaining to the current generation of Carnatic consumers who are steadily fed on the Zomato/Swiggy fare of Youtube airbrushed videos, FB, Instagram reels and so on that once upon a time, one indeed went to great lengths to go and sit in a classical Carnatic concert featuring just a violin, with mridangam and ghatam, that went on for 3 hours. It would be impossible for them to relate to. Indeed, silver-haired veterans too are indeed feeding on such "clips" nowadays instead of the long-braided concerts on stage! What a quarantine from real Carnatic music!

The Lalgudi-Parvathi connection has been well documented in this blog. There are over 40 posts mentioning the maestro and his great achievements as well as his emotional bond with the family of Parvathi. In our lives, many such associations are divinely ordained. This is our way of celebrating the Bharatiya culture with no barriers of language or region.

This concert features a solo violin rendition, unlike many other Parvathi concerts where the doyen was featured along with his children. Here, he is accompanied on the mridangam by Vid. Vellore Ramabhadran and on the khanjira by Vid. Ramachar. The mridangam follows the violin like a musical shadow. You can notice this in every song in this concert, especially in Vasantha, where the maestro presents a majestic rupaka-driven swara array.

The master of manodharma often conjures up a dialogue between the two personas inhabiting his single four-stringed violin with such juicy content that you marvel at his multidimensional musical imagination- especially with his multi-string bowing which is simply awesome.

The Shankarabharana suite is a violin ensemble serenading you on an oceanliner deck matching the majesty, silvery glitter and high waves of the mighty ocean. It is a tribute to Shankarabharana with the famous composition Enduku Peddalavale of Saint Thyagaraja. The welcome inclusion of the Tani in this recording is befitting the title of the "Parvathi Finale" upload.

Come, let us celebrate a bygone era of concerts!

Tempo rules supreme - In cricket or in a Carnatic concert!

Vid.TV Sankaranarayanan, Ramanavami 1996 at 'Parvathi'

Excerpts for the Parvathi Finale

Long before cricket pundits understood this, the doyens of Carnatic music sensed it and created a concert format where tempo rules supreme. Indeed, in a Carnatic concert worth its name, there is never a dull moment. Some score at such a breeze that they garner applause like boundaries at will, thrills filled to the gills.

The T.V. Sankaranarayanan brand of Carnatic music celebrates tempo better than perhaps any other brand. Endowed with a robust and sonorous voice, his music always soared relentlessly like his famous pose with raised hands. When accompaniment was good, the sustained tempo was matched by musical values and made every concert memorable. This current concert audio being uploaded for the Parvathi Finale is no exception! The excerpts capture the best of music with many stellar songs enhanced richly by teamwork, another feature of good cricket.

Charukeshi is celebrated grandly, and Ganesh Prasad excels in the Darbari Kanada piece building up to the famous Govardhana Giridhara. The mridangam is very melodious with fine anticipation. The little bit of Tani in the excerpt is enjoyable. Unfortunately, we are unable to trace the name of the Ghatam artiste.

Happy Listening!

Excerpts from the Doyen's Concert

1978 Sri Ramanavami Concert
Vid. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer - Vocal
Vid. T. Rukmini - Violin
Vid. Tanjore Upendran - Mridangam
Vid. Ramachar - Khanjira

Vidwan Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer strode the Carnatic scene for about 80 years as a colossus with his hugely charismatic and energetic vocal style that earned him the Sangeetha Kalanidhi when he was just 39. He had musical lineage and shone brightly as a torch-bearer for an energetic Carnatic music style that perhaps dominated the minds of students of Carnatic music who subsequently rose to become stars. His legion of Bhaktas included great singers like Vid. MSS herself, and instrumentalists like Vid. T.N. Krishnan and Vid. Vellore Ramabhadran and so on. Vid. Semmangudi also gave us his unforgettable musical creations through tuning a major portion of King Swathi Thirunal's compositions. The music and sahitya that came together in the final body of work made Swathi Thirunal a unique composer in Carnatic music.

The home of Parvathi played host to the doyen many times. We have managed to retrieve for the Finale excerpts from his concert in 1978. He is ably assisted by Vid. T. Rukmini and Vid. Tanjore Upendran and Vid. Ramachar. The musical value of these excerpts is immense as it celebrates the coming together of two great personalities in Carnatic music - Vid. Semmangudi and Sri. K. Srikantiah.

The strings that resound in heaven - Vid. Chitti Babu - Veena Excerpts

Parvathi Finale

Vid. Chitti Babu - Sri Ramanavami at Parvathi - 1982 - Concert Excerpts

In heaven, there is said to be music always. Remember that the gods are blessed to listen to the greatest of musicians. If I imagine what music from here would hold even the gods in thrall, it would be the Veena music of Vid. Chitti Babu. Unlike the modern sounds of Veena, which mimic an electric guitar, his Veena resonated with a strange charm of pure, golden, metallic and acoustic vibrational soundscape. It was rich, melodious and invigorating.

Yajnavalkya says,
वीणावादनतत्वज्ञः श्रुतिजातिविशारदः तालज्ञः अप्रयासेन मोक्षमार्गं नियच्छति
"The expert Vainika who knows ragas and talas well attain the path to liberation easily."

Vid. Chitti Babu arrived with his heavenly Veena music on the Mysore scene in the sixties. He enthralled audiences and even won the honour of getting the royal medallion.

In this 1982 concert, he was accompanied by Vid. Palghat Raghu and Vid. Manjunath. Unfortunately, we could not retrieve the entire concert recording but only an excerpt of his Tanam and the Javali that followed. The Tanam is a bouquet of ragas which simply steal our hearts with their melody. The instrumental technique is something extraordinary by any standard. The purity of sound and the resonance of the plucking endorse the idea that Tanam was created only for the Veena!

The ragas are Shubhapantuvarali...
                                       Madhuvanti...
                                               Ranjani...
                                                      Revati...
                                                           Behag...
                                                                Kanada...
                                                                       Kapi...
Followed by the delectable Javali in Kapi, "Sarasamulade" by Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar.

Then comes a Tillana in Tilang...

While listening to all these ragas pouring out, one thought of Kalidasa's Shyamaladandakam. He begins by saying how the Devi holds the Manikya Veena tenderly. He mentions how she holds the Veena called Vallaki and thoroughly enjoys its music. This comes again and again. And finally, he says she is being regaled by the celestials-
श्रवणहरदक्षिणक्वीणया वीणया किन्नरैर्गीयासे "You are being praised by Kinnaras accompanied expertly on the Veena that steals ears and hearts"... Did Kalidasa hear Vid. Chitti Babu?

Finding the Inner Calm through Music

Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar - 2014 Putturao Memorial Concert

Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar is a well-known musician and teacher as well as an acclaimed researcher in Carnatic music. She hails from Mysore and comes from a family of musicians. She did research on Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar krithis as well as musical instruments collected in the Mysore Palace many many years ago. She studied under maestros Vid. Ramaratnam and Vid. Gowri Kuppuswamy. She has been running her own music school as well as a publication under the name Surabhi. She is ably assisted by her daughter Dr. Sumana Vedanth in this concert. With doyens from Mysore on accompaniment - Sri.H.K. Narasimha Murthy on the violin and Sri G.S. Ramanujam on the mridangam as well as Sri Ramesh on Morsing, she presents here a consummate concert in characteristic style with palpable depth.

What characterises great Carnatic music? This is a debatable subject. But all our esteemed composers opine that really great music leads one to inner calm. If that is missing, music could well become a circus.

Here, the Vidushi espouses this idea with choice songs, all presented in a sedate style, lacking nothing in Vidwat or musical appeal. Sonorous voices of the mother and daughter take turns in alapana and swaras and give us a wholesome fare.

The idea of inner calm is expressed beautifully by Saint Gopala Dasa in his song "ಏನು ಸುಖವೊ ಎಂಥಾ ಸುಖವೊ ಹರಿಯಧ್ಯಾನವ ಮಾಡುವರ ಸಂಗ", sung in Brindavani here.

In this concert, there are wonderful compositions presented of famous composers in scintillating ragas. Two Kannada songs, one of them a Vachana, and a rarely heard Shanmukhapriya composition of Mysore Vasudevacharya, point to the Vidushi's expansive repertoire.
